SPO Atelier began as a small workshop of engineers who kept being called in when a room was almost finished and the technical system had not yet been imagined properly. We work at that hinge: the point where architecture, cabling, control surfaces, media and the people who operate them all have to agree. From the Winterbourne Road studio we take on commissions across the United Kingdom and Europe, and we stay with each project from first sketch to final commissioning. The work is quiet, precise and deliberately unglamorous until you stand in front of it and everything simply behaves.
Our discipline is computer integrated systems design, which in our hands means treating a building or a venue as one instrument. A lighting rig, a sound field, a set of motorised elements and a bank of screens stop being separate trades and become facets of a single responsive environment. We write the specification, we build the control hardware, we integrate third party equipment, and we hand over a system that an operator can understand in an afternoon. If you need to read more about how we structure an engagement, the services page sets out the full method.
What distinguishes the practice is temperament. We favour robust industrial parts over fashionable modules, documented protocols over locked black boxes, and honest engineering over spectacle for its own sake. A finished SPO Atelier system should feel inevitable, as though it could not have been arranged any other way. That is the equilibrium we are always balancing toward.
